Freight deliveries require a delivery time be scheduled and someone must be present at the time of delivery to inspect and sign for the merchandise. A representative from the freight carrier will call the phone number entered at checkout to schedule the delivery.

Liftgate Service

For freight deliveries, you have the option of adding a liftgate to your delivery. A liftgate is the device that lowers a product from the truck to ground level.

CPO recommends adding liftgate service for freight deliveries exceeding 100 lbs if you do not have a loading dock or fork lift at the delivery address. Additional charges may apply. The liftgate option will be presented during the checkout process.

Product Overview

This PM2800B Drill Press was designed with the woodworker in mind. The design has many convenient features that other so called woodworking drill presses do not offer. The twin LED lights are designed to not cast shadows on the work piece and twin lasers help to pinpoint exactly on the work piece. The expandable work table is the largest in the industry and class. The single handle speed change allows you to run the full range of speeds without ever touching a belt. The front-mounted digital readout displays the exact speed of the running spindle. Also features a larger motor than any other drill press in its class - convenient for handling the heaviest jobs.
  • Mechanical variable-speed allows for full range of speed with no belt changes
  • 6 in. of quill travel with just one revolution of the handle
  • Fence system is adjustable for a perfect 90 degree angle to the table
  • Adjustable material stop makes repetitive actions accurate and quick
  • A digital RPM readout meter allows users to optimize the spindle speed to the application
  • Laser guides provide an accurate indication for tool point of entry
  • Easy to use keyless chuck makes bit changes fast and simple
  • Reversible handles can be mounted on either side of the machine to provide more comfort when working the quill
  • Two independent LED work lights eliminate shadows and provide a clearer view of the work piece
  • Work table can be rotated a full 90 degrees to adjust to application and operation
  • Replaceable square table insert with leveling screws make it flush with table top
  • Oversized cast iron base for added stability and security
  • Safety key prevents accidental unit starts for enhanced safety
  • PM2800B 115/230V 1 HP 1-Phase 18 in. Variable-Speed Drill Press - 1792800B

Great drill press, needs careful setup
I bought this DP primarily for woodworking, with the occasional metal working project. In wood, it has power to spare, and in metal the RPM range is great. Changing speeds is as simple as spinning a wheel, very easy and reliable.

The only real problem with this DP is that the table doesn't have slots to bolt down a drill press vise. I don't do enough metal work for this to matter, but if I end up needing it, I'll buy a second table.

Finally, a note of caution: Learn how to properly setup a drill press before wading in. The manual is a little too brief on how important it is to clean the arbor and mating surfaces, and there are no details on removing the chuck if you mess up. This is where a larger taper (3MT) would have been nice. It's too bad *all* woodworking drill presses use a 2MT or smaller taper.

Why does this matter? Well, it's easy to install the arbor into the chuck (JT3) a bit crooked. I had runouts of 0.01" at first, which was coming entirely from the chuck-arbor interface. With a 2MT-JT3 arbor, there's no bearing surface for the chuck removal wedges. To remove the chuck, you have to drill a cross hole through the arbor, insert a pin, and wedge against that. I didn't learn about that trick until *after* I had already mangled the chuck trying to disassemble it, so I had to replace both arbor and chuck.

With a new arbor and chuck in hand, I did what I should have from the beginning - Deburred and cleaned both ends of all tapers with acetone, inserted the arbor into the chuck with a twisting motion and one tap on the benchtop. Then into the DP's taper, and a press onto wood. With this process, I had runout at 0.005". Then, with a 1/2" drill rod chucked, I tapped the "high spots" down until I had a 0.002" runout 6" from the chuck.

Long story short: The drill press is fantastic. Anything you read about large runouts is probably operator error. Learn how to install tapers first.

Very useful
Be sure to insert the worm gear in pinion are of table support before mounting on rack .

Although the table has no slots or holes, I found the K**g clamps will fit in the T-slots to work as hold-downs. The fence provided clamps well into place. L** V*ll*y T-slot clamp plates fit in the T-slots and will carry various clamps too.

Buy a 2MT "green weenie" to prep and maintain the chuck spindle taper hole. That helps ensure minimum runout....

Powermatic Drill Press
It is a very good all around drill press. The variable speed works great and for me is a must have. I like the laser guides and they are easy to adjust. The drill press has some well designed quick adjusters to control the depth of quill travel. The LED lights provide very good illumination. The most disappointing thing for me is that the quill travel isn't smooth, doesn't seem to travel through the range smoothly nor retract to the beginning position as sharply as it should. It is overpriced, even when on sale, but at the same time I'm not disappointed except for the way it flows through the six inch range of travel - just doesn't travel through the six inch range with ease and snap back as it should. There is an adjustment, I haven't tried it, suspect it would help some, but doubt that it would truly correct the issue.

Well built and fun to use
I am a woodworker - working in hardwoods and exotics. Just about every project requires the use of the drill press. This is the easiest to use and most accurate drill press that I've ever used. The lighting is excellent (with two opposing LED lights - so no shadows), and the laser cross hairs improve the speed and sense of accuracy. Less guessing where the hole will be drilled. The table is smooth and flat, and has a well-thought-out fence with stop block for repeatable drilling. The motor never bogs down - due to the size (Hp) and the quick speed changes (just turn the crank). Another great feature is the quick setting depth gauge (just press a button and move the stop). Again, everything about this drill press makes it easy and quick to do the job.

Awsome Drill Press
The unit is well made and runs great. Best to convert it to 230 volts. Only problem that I had was that the instruction manual was rather brief. It could have included more example and pictures. However a mechanically inclined person could figure it out. With the lasers, I can drill numerous holes in little or not time. I would buy this unit again.

As expected
Most of my large tools are Powermatic, so I knew this would be a great drill press. The laser crosshairs was a feature I didn't think was needed, but now that I have it, I use it all the time. The laser is easy to adjust and stays adjusted. Although most of us can drill a hole without guidance, this feature speed up the process. The LED lighting is also great. unlike my old press that had a big light that needed to be positioned and repositioned the PM2800B has two low profile LED lights positioned so that the table is well lit. One of the greatest features is the plunge depth adjustment, it is very quick and easy to use. Press the button in and move it up and down and then fine tune it by turning it to the exact depth. This press is smooth running and quite with no vibrations, this makes drilling clean and easy and although I use it mainly for woodwork I know it is powerful enough to drill anything I'll need it to drill.

Excellent Drill Press
This is a large, well-built, solid, powerful, professional quality drill press. It is overkill for my hobby workshop, but it sure is nice. The hand crank speed adjustment allows infinite adjustment of the drill speed from 250 - 3000 RPMS without touching a belt. The keyless chuck makes bit changes a snap without having to search for a chuck key. The laser cross hair makes it very easy to pinpoint the hole location. The dual lights provide bright illumination of the table and work piece without any set it up This is a heavy machine. The manual recommends 2 people to set it up. I put the drill press together by myself using an approach somewhat different than that described in the manual, but it was not easy. I did have a disappointing experience with the amount of run-out on the drill bit when I first tested it - about .0055 in. I called Powermatic customer service and the technician gave me a couple of tips that I used to reduce the run-out to .0015 in., which is well within the tolerances for any work I am likely to do.

A great drill press in every way
The unit came packed in a way that would prevent damage. Assembly was easy, straight forward and well documented. I assembled the unit laying flat and used a chain hoist to stand it up since I didn't have a second person to help.

Since changing speed is easy I am more likely to set the proper speed for a given task. This results in very clean holes. The laser speeds locating center of holes. The tables is large and easy to clamp to. The fence and stop are very convenient to use. While I didn't drill anything requiring much power, a 1 hp motor should be adequate for all likely tasks.

I needed to adjust the laser but it was easy and just took a few minutes. A minor disadvantage is that the electronics and display remain on when the unit is plugged in. I unplug it.

Incredable tool worth every dime!
#1 Changing speed is so much easier then moving around belt and trying to remember which pulley to put the belt on. Worth the difference for that feature alone...................
#2 Easy to put together
#3 FREE shipping was great
#4 This is the third LARGE tool this year "Will buy from them again"

Most drill presses have a center hole on the table for drilling thru, the center plate on the Powermatic appears to be a solid piece indicating that a block or board would always be needed?
RICHERD H on Jun 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is a wood or in this case my drill press came with a hardboard insert which can be replaced when needed. It can also be leveled to the DP table. (This is a nice feature that some drill presses do not have) The block of course could be removed if one desired during use.
What is the assembled height of this drill press. Can't find it anywhere. Needs to fit in a tight space on a ship.
S. on Sep 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This drill press is pretty close to 6' tall. The 58" answers are incorrect.
What is the country of manufacture.
Johnny on Jul 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: My drill press is stamped "Made in China," which was a little disappointing since the other Powermatic tools I have were at least made in the free country of Taiwan rather than the PRC. Still it seems to be a quality machine.
Does it have a Quill Lock at different depths?
Ron on Sep 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There is not a "Quill Lock." However, there is an excellent and easily adjustable depth gauge.
