Product Overview

Details

The Powermatic PM701 Bench Top Mortiser features an in-line depth stop which allows the user to stop at preset depths without racking the mortiser bit to the base. Its heavy-duty reversible handle is so versatile that it can be changed from one side to the other quickly and easily, and requires no tools to do so. The stock hold-down features a specially designed double-lock system. A quick-action cam-lock will quickly lock the fence into position with one 90 degree movement. An integrated bit and chisel spacer system accurately and quickly account for the space needed between the bit and chisel during setup. Large work surfaces in the table and fence allow for more stability and accurate cuts.

Pros

Impressive tool, but not for Jatoba.
Jatoba is too dense for even a scary sharp premium chisel.

Well made machine
Well made machine with some nice features. Build quality is very good, easy and straight forward to use. Once set up adjustments are easy and tool-free. For the price I think it is hard to go wrong with this machine. I bought the Powermatic chisels to use with it and thought they do a very good job also.

Excellent Machine
Took just a few minutes to setup. It does seem that the chisel to bitt clearance set by the gauges on the machine may be too much for clean holes to the bottom of the mortice. I've just finished one small red oak table (28 Mortise and tenon joints), and the machine worked well. I did have to clean out several of the mortices because they didn't cut all the way to the bottom (the problem is easily fixed by just cutting the mortice a little deeper, etc.)

Great tool, especially for a hobbyist
For what I expected, I can't ask for more. It's obviously not a floor model with more bells and whistles. However, it is built like a tank, is very easy to use, and will do everything that I need in a hobbyist's shop. One odd (but unimportant) thing that I immediately found is that the Powermatic chisels that I bought with it have 3/4" shanks. I expected 5/8", which is fine. But, there are only two holes in the tool holder on the back of the mortiser that are 3/4", and one of these is for the chuck key. So, I'll do what I probably would do any way and put the chisels in one of my tool boxes with my bench chisels.

Reviews on Amazon have indicated that there has been trouble with the teeth of the arm lowering rack failing under heavy loads, has this design been updated? While I'll probably only use 1/2" chisels as the largest, I have very hard woods I'm going to be cutting for there might be a lot of force on the down stroke. I am a Powermatic user that bought my Model 100 planer new back in 1980 and my Model 81 bandsaw along with my Model 66 table saw shortly after so i have a strong attraction to Powermatic but since you moved production to China I've seen some iffy reports.

BEST ANSWER: I cut 72 3/8" wide, 1.75" deep mortises in a row and never once felt like
this machine was at risk of breaking. I can't speak to your specific
scenario, but I will say that this is a very solid machine, much more so
than any other brands I looked at in the $3-500 range.

Is this machine supposed to run quietly or is it real loud?
