Details

A spiral head on this 15HH Deluxe Planer provides smoother cutting and a finer finish than conventional knives. Three V-belts transfer maximum power from the 3 HP motor to the Byrd Shelix Helical cutterhead. Your workpiece will get substantial support from the precision-ground cast-iron table and two large extension wings. The 4 in. dust port angles the collection hose away from the work area. Stock return rollers atop the machine speed repetitive cuts. The serrated steel infeed and smooth steel outfeed roller allow for 1/8 in. maximum depth of cut and trouble-free operation. A 2-speed gearbox features an automatic chain tensioner. The one-piece welded steel stand has built-in lockable casters for easy movement around the shop.

Comments about 15HH 15 in. 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230V Deluxe Planer with Byrd Shelix Cutterhead:

I was familiar with this machine, one of my woodworking buddies has one. I had a dewalt 735 with a Byrd SHELIX head and couldn't have been happier with the quality of cut, but it was so lacking in power that the DW735 took 7 passes to do what the Powermatic does in three. I built a rolling base to be able to steer the machine and raise it about 3 inches allowing me to plane onto my PM2000 table saw outfeed. Now how to talk my wife into the 8 inch PM jointer.

Comments about 15HH 15 in. 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230V Deluxe Planer with Byrd Shelix Cutterhead:

Planes so smooth you don't need to sand. So quiet you don't need hearing protection. Rollers need to allow heavy machine to turn. Adjusting the tables is almost impossible. Poor design on adjustment.

Comments about 15HH 15 in. 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230V Deluxe Planer with Byrd Shelix Cutterhead:

Overall, nice planer. The cutterhead does a GREAT job and makes this planer very good...without it I wound have reated it a 2 or 3 star. The planer has sufficiant power. The Manual analog guage works poorly and the digital should be included, especially at this price. Very Very cheap ([*]) paintjob. This is my first power planer. My expectations were very high and frankly I was disappointed because of the cheap [*] assembly, paint and packing.I think Powermatic USED to be the gold standard for woodworking tools but they have SOLD out to the allmighty dollar.I have two Powermatic tools(this planer and the drill press). I doubt that I will ever buy their products again.

Comments about 15HH 15 in. 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230V Deluxe Planer with Byrd Shelix Cutterhead:

This is one GREAT product. I have owned it for over six months now and it has impressed several of my woodworking friends!! It isn't cheap, but as they always say, "You get what you pay for". The wood exits the planer using the Byrd Shelix head so smooth it needs almost no sanding and would be ready to go straight to painting in most cases. It is a very powerful machine and has not shown any strain, even when cutting 12" Black Walnut. It also does very well on figured woods, with very little tear out. I have been extremely satisfied and would recommend this product to anyone. I only wish it had a better thickness gauge.

Comments about 15HH 15 in. 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230V Deluxe Planer with Byrd Shelix Cutterhead:

I bought this machine to replace an old Parks 12" 3-knife cutter head. What a difference. The Powermatic machine is MUCH quieter and leaves a beautiful finish with only tiny 'ripples' that can be sanded smooth easily. Necessity for sanding has been greatly reduced. Grain tear out is virtually a thing of the past. Machine can be rolled around easily for use in small shops. I suspect that the one set of carbide 4-sided cutter inserts will last me for 10 years or more.

          Q:

I was told I could save a little money if the item was delivered to a location that had a forklift. Is that correct? Also I wanted to order a depth gauge with this planer but could not find where I could add it. PS I have had my 8" jointer for over 30 years and love it.

            A:

This planner requires a lift gate to be delivered. If you can have it delivered to a location with a loading dock or a forklift this would save you the lift gate fee.
