Comments about PM2700 1-Phase 3-Horsepower 230 Volt Shaper:
The Powermatic shaper is a solid workhorse. I’m very impressed with the overall appearance and finish of the machine. The machine is heavy and solidly made. There are many features I love about this machine. The top is large and finely machined with fully bossed and threaded holes to receive a feeder. To mount a feeder in the past I have drilled and taped holes in the top with varying degrees of success. The ½” collet attachment is wonderful. It is like have a router table on steroids. The power switch has a safety feature I really like. There is a magnetic interlock that must be in place for the power to turn on. When changing tooling I take out the magnetic interlock and place it on the table so I know that it is safe to change the tool. The belt adjustment is wonderful. A toggle clamp controls belt tension. To change speeds one operates the toggle clamp to loosen the belt, move the belt to the new position and then operate the toggle back to the tension position. Very fast. The miter gage that comes with the shaper is wonderful. The bar can be fine tuned to fit the slot. There is an extrusion that can be positioned to support the work, and fixtures can be added to the extrusion to all the custom things one needs to do on a shaper.
The fence is fantastic. In the past the first thing I would do is through away the fence that came with the shaper because it was useless. This fence is solid with adjustments that make it extremely accurate and useful. Casters in the base of the machine are perfect for me. I need to move the shaper from its storage location into operation because I have limited space. Just a few turns on the hand wheel and the casters in the base allow me to move it with ease. The dust ports are well thought out. There is one for the cutter area, as one would expect. There is another under the table to catch the shavings that fall through the throat. The spindle height hand wheel and lock are solid like the rest of the machine. The final feature I love is the digital readout for spindle height. It makes setups quick and easy. I mount a cutter on the spindle and lower it so that the cutter is flush with the shaper table. (I use a dial indicator.) I zero out the digital gage and then raise it to working height and record the reading. The next time I need to use that cutter I can repeat the set up exactly.
There is only one thing I would change about this tool and that is that the spindle does lower enough to take full advantage of the spindle length.
Overall this is the best shaper I have ever owned.
